The main thing about Tallinn is that there isn’t a particular ‘must-see’ attraction, like the Big Ben in London or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Tallinn is more about the vibes and overall experience. Nevertheless, if you’re in Tallinn, you simply can’t miss the Old Town. Here are my top picks for places to visit in Tallinn Old Town which you can also use a mini-itinerary:
Viru Gates and Viru Street (Viru Värav, Viru tänav)
Viru Street and Viru Gates is probably the liveliest place in the whole of Estonia, and it is also a good starting point for your journey into the Old Town. These twin towers were part of the city’s old walls way back in the 14th century. Walking through them is like stepping back in time.
St. Catherine’s Passage (Katariina käik)
From Viru street, take a walk down St. Catherine’s Passage. It’s a cute street with cobblestones, old stone houses and Medieval tombstones. Plus, if you’re into making stuff, there are lots of little workshops where you can watch people making art.
Tallinn Town Hall and Town Hall Square (Tallinna Raekoda, Raekoja Plats) – the heart of Tallinn Old Town
From St. Catherine’s Passage you can easily walk to Tallinn Town Hall, an absolute must-see. This isn’t just any town hall – it’s the oldest one still standing in Northern Europe. Yup, it’s been around for centuries, holding a history as vast as the sky. First mentioned in written records in 1322, this place has seen the unfolding of time, and it’s survived it all!
The Town Hall is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and on the top you will see a charming weather vane known as Old Thomas (Vana Toomas), a guardian figure who’s been overseeing Tallinn since 1530.
Stepping outside the Town Hall, you’ll find yourself in the lively Town Hall Square. This place is the beating heart of Old Town. The cobblestone square, lined with historical buildings, hums with energy and activity all year round.
Town Hall Square hosts an array of events throughout the year. In the summer, it’s filled with outdoor cafes, craft markets, and music performances, offering a perfect spot to chill and soak up the atmosphere. It’s also the venue for the Old Town Days festival, a cultural event that celebrates Tallinn’s history with parades, workshops, and concerts.
As winter sets in, the Square transforms into a magical wonderland. It’s home to Tallinn’s famous Christmas Market, one of the most beautiful in Europe. Here you can sip on hot mulled wine, shop for artisan gifts, and enjoy the enchanting holiday vibe.
While you’re at the Town Hall Square, be sure to check out the Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy. It’s the oldest pharmacy in Europe that still operates today. You can enter for free, see a small exhibition of Medieval medicines, and even buy them as a souvenir.
Danish King’s Garden (Taani kuninga aed)
From Town Hall Square take a walk up the Lühike Jalg (which literally translates as “short leg” and check out the Danish King’s Garden. It’s a pretty garden with a cool story – they say the Danish flag fell from the sky here during a big fight in the 13th century. And there are three spooky statues of monks in the garden that you gotta see.
Toompea Castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Toompea loss, Aleksander Nevski katedraal)
Next, hit up Toompea Castle. It’s up on a hill and it’s got bits and pieces from different times in history. And guess what? These days, the building functions as the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu).
On the opposite side from Toompea castle you will see Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. With its big domes and fancy decorations, it’s one of the best Orthodox churches you’ll see. Plus, you can go inside and look around for free.
Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform (Kohtuotsa vaateplats)
For a wicked view of Tallinn’s Old Town, go to the Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform. You can see everything from here – the red roofs of Tallinn Old Town, the new part of the city, and the sea. It’s the perfect spot for that awesome holiday snap!
So that’s my list of top spots in Tallinn Old Town. But remember, there’s so much more to see. So wander around, take your time, and just enjoy the vibe.
